Gavriil Malysh was born in the Ukraine in 1907 and graduated from the Odessa Art Institute in 1934. He fondly remembers his institute’s professors, and is especially grateful to Professors T.B. Fraerman and A.F.Gaush, who taught him to see and understand the art of painting. Professor Fraerman shared his love of impressionism and French paintings of the early 20th Century. Other influences include Russian artists I.Levitan, V. Serov, M.Vrubel, P.Kontchalovsky, who are both intimate friends. In 1935 he moved to Leningrad and joined the Leningrad section of the USSR Artist’ Union in 1955. Displays his works regulary in various exhibitions. His paintings have been aquired for the Russian Museum (Saint-Petersburg), a number of other art museums abroad (in USA, Mexico, Taiwan, Ukraine) and of the Russian (Vologda, Volgograd, Nalchik, Khabarovsk, Krasnoyarsk, Syktyvkar, Barnaul, Petrozavodsk), as well as for private collections abroad (USA, England, Finland, Sweden, France, Germany, Japan). 
The artist composes his works through his imagination without preliminary outline. He sees the whole composition of a painting before he paints. His landscapes are often painted at once, “a la prima”, all in one breath. For large paintings, he applies colors very thickly, increasing the coating of color, while deepening the tint. 
Mr. Malysh organizes and balances the chaos of the outer world in one harmony of color and composition when painting landscapes. 
The artist’s still lifes, which are painted in water color, are distinctively fresh and spontaneous. 
The subject matter and objects in the artist’s paintings are used repeatedly, however, their composition, colors and rhythmical constructions make one perceive each of them differently.
