Zhang Yibo Biography

Zhang Yibo was born in 1966.  He graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1985.

While studying art at college, Yibo was under the direct tutelage of contemporary masters of the classical oil painting tradition (such as Wang Yidong, Jin Shangyi, Sun Weimin).

He incorporates classical Chinese elements such as period costumes replete with antique jewelry and furniture, to set the background of his paintings to the late 19th Century and early 20th century Qing Dynasty Era.

During his contact with the peoples of the Miao Tribe in Southwestern China, Yibo was greatly influenced by their rich traditions and simple lifestyle. He has since incorporated these two cultural characteristics in his works.

Says Yibo; "I like to use warm colours as the glow is gentle and soothing, signifying purity and hope; whereas the surrounding dark areas serve to intensify the chiaroscuro effect, adding a tinge of mystery."
